The story of Clinique

Clinique was born in New York in 1968, inside Estée Lauder's company, with what was then a novel promise: allergy-tested cosmetics developed with input from dermatologists. The brand built its image on white lab coats, pale green packaging and a three-step skincare ritual. Fragrance was never its core business, but one launch left a lasting mark: Aromatics Elixir, in 1971, composed by Bernard Chant, the perfumer behind several great chypres of the era. Far from the soft florals you might expect from a skincare label, it was a dense, herbal aromatic chypre, originally presented as something to be applied to the skin in small touches. It has kept its audience across the decades, especially among lovers of vintage perfumery and assertive trails. Other scents followed, such as Clinique Happy in the late 1990s, but Aromatics Elixir remains the brand's olfactory signature and the reason perfume lovers know the name.

An olfactory signature

Aromatics Elixir sums up Clinique's fragrance style on its own: an aromatic, bitter and enveloping chypre. Chamomile, coriander and bergamot open onto a dense floral heart of rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang, before a base of oakmoss, patchouli and vetiver. The effect is herbal, almost medicinal at first, then earthy and warm. It is the opposite of a crowd-pleaser: a composition with real character and remarkable staying power, recognisable from across a room.

Which Clinique perfume to choose?

Aromatics Elixir is the only Clinique scent in our database. Choose it if you love classic chypres, oakmoss and patchouli, or if soft florals bore you. It is powerful, so one or two sprays are enough, ideally on skin rather than clothing. Wear it for a full day before committing, because its herbal opening can surprise a first-time wearer.

Frequently asked questions

What does Clinique Aromatics Elixir smell like?

Aromatics Elixir opens on chamomile, coriander and bergamot, with a herbal, slightly bitter effect. The heart of rose, jasmine and ylang-ylang adds floral density, then oakmoss, patchouli and vetiver lay down an earthy, woody and warm base that is very typical of the great chypres of the 1970s.

Is Aromatics Elixir a strong perfume?

Yes. Listed as a parfum in our database, Aromatics Elixir is known for its longevity and generous trail. A light application is plenty, especially in enclosed spaces. It wears particularly well in cool weather, when its patchouli and oakmoss can unfold without feeling stifling or overwhelming.

Who created Aromatics Elixir?

Aromatics Elixir was composed by perfumer Bernard Chant and launched by Clinique in 1971. It belongs to the great tradition of aromatic chypres of its time, built on oakmoss and patchouli, while showing a singular herbal personality that is still widely sought after today.
