Our take
What does Assam of India smell like?
Toulouse house Berdoues launched its Collection Grands Crus in 2015, a line of eaux de parfum each devoted to a region of the world. Assam of India honours the tea of that northeastern Indian state. The opening smells of Menton lemon, zested rather than squeezed, with a little bergamot. Black tea arrives fast. It is tannic and slightly malty, like a cup left to steep too long. A touch of cardamom warms it. The base lays down creamy Mysore sandalwood and quiet musk. It is a clear scent, almost a drink, and it stays crisp from start to finish. Compared with Dior's far pricier Thé Cachemire, it is more tannic and less musky. Longevity is short at about three hours. The value is the draw, since tea this legible rarely comes so cheap. Berdoues also sells travel sizes, handy for a refresh.
