What does Grasse Rose smell like?
Grasse rose smells less like a garden than a jar of honey. Its absolute is rich and slightly waxy, with a pinch of pepper and a green stem note. It has less fruity depth than Damask rose but more softness. There is also an almost spicy facet close to clove. In perfume it gives a round, luminous heart. On skin it melts into musk and lasts a long time.
Origin and production
Rose centifolia (Rosa × centifolia) is a hundred-petal rose grown around Grasse for centuries. It blooms once a year, in May. Picking is done by hand early in the morning. The flowers go through volatile solvent extraction, which gives a concrete and then an absolute. The perfume skills of the Grasse area have been on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list since 2018.
How perfumers use it
Grasse rose pairs with jasmine, the other Grasse flower, and with musks. It also handles patchouli and leather. Dior Joy (2018) sets it in the heart with jasmine and peach. Joy Intense (2019) makes it more vanillic. Miss Dior Rose N'Roses (2020) doubles it with Damask rose for a very fresh effect. Guerlain goes for contrast in La Petite Robe Noire Black Perfecto (2017), with a base of leather and patchouli.
How to wear it
Grasse rose suits spring days. Rose N'Roses can take three sprays at the office. Joy Intense is warmer and better kept for the evening.
