Our take
What does Joy Intense smell like?
Dior released Joy Intense in 2019, a year after Joy, with Jennifer Lawrence still the face of the line. François Demachy kept the same structure and pushed it toward the base. The opening holds on to the original's light, with bergamot and neroli turned down a notch. Grasse rose and jasmine then form a dense floral heart that feels almost candied. The powdery side of the flowers blends early with the warm base. Vanilla and tonka take up a lot of room. Sandalwood and musk smooth them out and leave a creamy trace on a scarf the next morning. Next to the 2018 Joy, Intense is rounder and sweeter. It is also less radiant. Fans of the fresh rose in the original may be disappointed. Anyone who found Joy too polite will be happier here.
When to wear it
