What does Solar Notes smell like?
Solar notes smell like warm skin late in the afternoon, once the sunscreen has sunk in. There is a slightly oily softness, a white-flower touch and a faintly salty base. Some people pick up coconut, others sand or tanning oil. The effect is enveloping without being sweet. On skin these notes melt into musks and make a perfume feel as if it has been worn for hours.
Origin and production
The solar accord relies largely on salicylates, synthetic molecules with a soft floral smell. The same families of molecules have long been used to scent sunscreens, hence the instant association. Perfumers often add coconut-like lactones and white flowers such as ylang-ylang or frangipani, sometimes with a salty touch.
How perfumers use it
Solar notes sit in the heart or base. Dior placed them in the base of Fahrenheit 32 (2007), with vanilla, under a heart of orange blossom and vetiver. Nina Ricci sets them with driftwood in L'Air du Paradis (2018), after frangipani and jasmine. Reminiscence made them the centre of Rem Coco (2020), between coconut milk and sea notes. Giorgio Armani Sì Passione Red Maestro (2019) pairs them with jasmine.
How to wear it
Solar notes are made for summer, but they also work in winter as a reminder of holidays. Spray them on skin rather than clothes: they need warmth to open up.
