Our take
What does Santal Majuscule smell like?
Serge Lutens released Santal Majuscule in 2012 as an eau de parfum composed by Christopher Sheldrake. The house names only three materials: sandalwood, cacao and damask rose. Cacao comes first. It is dry and slightly bitter, closer to cocoa powder than to a chocolate bar. The rose slips in behind it and never smells like a garden. Think of a petal pressed in a book. Then the sandalwood takes over. It is creamy and a little sweet, with the polished softness the name promises. Several critics also pick up tonka bean, which would explain the gourmand feel of the drydown. Longevity is good for a woody scent. There is no incense and no smoke. Next to Le Labo's Santal 33, which is drier and leathery, Santal Majuscule feels round and almost edible. This is sandalwood for wool sweaters rather than for concept stores.
When to wear it
Wear it in autumn and winter, on skin or on a wool scarf. Two sprays are enough since it lasts well but stays close to the body.
It belongs to the Woody, Gourmand family. Santal Majuscule is one of 31 creations by Serge Lutens in our encyclopedia.
