Our take
What does Clair de Musc smell like?
Serge Lutens launched Clair de Musc in 2003 as a bright counterpoint to the animal musk of Muscs Koublaï Khan. Christopher Sheldrake composed it. The house cites Debussy's Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and describes a musk clear as crystal. Bergamot and neroli open on a clean, almost soapy note, with a plant musk already mixed in. Jasmine and rose stay very quiet in the heart. Their job is to give the powdery musk some body. The base is the best part. Tuscan iris brings a fine powder and sandalwood a creamy softness, while ambrette seed adds a skin-like texture. Compared with Narciso Rodriguez For Her, Clair de Musc is more powdery and less sensual. It's quiet, but it isn't simple. Some people find it too soapy or too short-lived on skin.
