Our take
What does Beau de Jour smell like?
Tom Ford released Beau de Jour in 2019, an eau de parfum meant as a dandy's tribute to the classic fougère. Several sources credit Antoine Maisondieu as the perfumer. Lavender opens almost alone, doubled by a more camphorous lavandin. It smells of barbershops, shaving foam and clean laundry. Rosemary, mint and basil join in the heart, along with a geranium that leans toward green rose. Oakmoss bridges to the base. Patchouli, amber and ambergris add a quiet warmth with no sugar. You can hear the grammar of old fougères, cleaned up for modern noses. Compared with Caron's Pour un Homme, another great masculine lavender, Beau de Jour is more herbal and much less vanilla. It could use a little more warmth late in the wear. Longevity, on the other hand, is solid and the projection stays polite.
When to wear it
An ideal office scent in spring or autumn. Three sprays on the chest before the shirt goes on and it lasts the day.
It belongs to the Fougère, Aromatic family. Beau de Jour is one of 33 creations by Tom Ford in our encyclopedia.
