The story of Abercrombie & Fitch
The company began in 1892, when David T. Abercrombie opened a Manhattan shop selling gear for hunting, fishing and camping. Ezra Fitch, first a customer, became a partner, and the business took the name Abercrombie & Fitch in the early 1900s. For decades it outfitted explorers and outdoorsmen. After a period of decline, it was relaunched in the 1990s as a fashion label for young adults, built on a tightly controlled store experience: dark wood, loud music and a scent pumped into the air. Launched in 2002, Fierce became that scent, so closely tied to the stores that many shoppers could recognise the brand before seeing a single logo. It remains one of the best-known examples of scent marketing in American retail fashion.
An olfactory signature
The brand's olfactory signature lives in Fierce, a woody aromatic eau de cologne that opens on petitgrain, lemon, orange and a bright snap of cardamom. The heart pairs rosemary with jasmine and lily of the valley for a clean, almost soapy freshness. Underneath sits a generous musk over oakmoss, vetiver and dry woods. It smells of freshly washed skin and cotton, more energetic than deep, and it was built to project clearly and be recognised at once.
Which Abercrombie & Fitch perfume to choose?
In our database the brand is represented by Fierce, its cornerstone since 2002. Choose it if you want an easy fresh-woody musk that works for the office as well as weekends. As an eau de cologne, it rewards moderate spraying and a top-up later in the day. If you prefer more classic aromatic fougères, compare it with Davidoff Cool Water or Cerruti 1881.
