What does Powdery Notes smell like?
Powdery notes smell of a grandmother's compact, lipstick and talc on clean skin. They are soft without being sugary. Depending on the material there is a hint of almond, violet or even carrot. The effect is comforting and a little retro. Overdone, it can smell like cosmetics. In perfume a powdery touch softens a musky base or a sticky vanilla. On skin it stays close and lasts a long time.
Origin and production
The powdery accord draws on several families. Iris gives a refined, earthy powder thanks to the irones in its rhizome. Heliotropin smells of almond and modelling clay. Ionones bring violet, and white musks bring clean laundry. Coumarin and vanillin add roundness. Most of these molecules are made synthetically today, since natural orris is very expensive.
How perfumers use it
Powder acts as a veil over a floral or gourmand. It pairs with iris, rose and musks. Love, Chloé (2010) makes it the subject, with rice powder and heliotrope. Prada Candy (2011) opens with it next to caramel and musk. Dior Dioramour (2018) puts it at the start of an iris and jasmine composition. Hermès Eau de Narcisse Bleu (2013) keeps it in the base, drier and greener.
How to wear it
Powdery notes work all year, best in winter. Two sprays of Love, Chloé are fine for the office. Candy is sweeter and suits evenings better.
