Our take
What does Purple Oud smell like?
Purple Oud joined La Collection Privée Christian Dior in 2018. François Demachy composed it, and Dior ties the name to purple, its couture colour for daring. Demachy described it as a sparkling oud. The opening proves the point. Sweet orange brings juicy light, unexpected above such a heavy wood. Pink pepper follows, dry and faintly rosy, then saffron adds the texture of fine leather. The base is a polished oud wood, fairly clean, without the animal or cheesy facets of rawer ouds. Woody notes surround it with a quiet roundness. Dior publishes no official pyramid, but the structure reads clearly. Next to Oud Ispahan, the rose oud from the same collection, Purple Oud is spicier and less floral. It is so smooth that it sometimes lacks mystery, which is a strange flaw for an oud.
