Our take
What does Fidji smell like?
Joséphine Catapano of IFF composed Fidji for Guy Laroche in 1966. Launch dates vary between sources, and Wikipedia gives 1973. The perfume helped establish the green floral chypre as a family. Its opening is the main event. Galbanum comes in very green and almost cutting, with ylang-ylang taking the edge off. The heart then turns warmer. Jasmine, rose and tuberose are spiked by carnation and clove, which give the bouquet a peppery bite. Iris adds a touch of powder. The base combines musk, patchouli, sandalwood and amber. It stays warm rather than heavy. Fidji has been reformulated over the decades. Several reviewers who know the older bottles find the current base thinner and less warm. The green opening, on the other hand, still does its job.
When to wear it
Spring and summer, for daytime or the office. One spray on each wrist is enough and the galbanum does the rest.
It belongs to the Floral, Green family. Fidji is one of 2 creations by Guy Laroche in our encyclopedia.
