Carnation in Perfume: a Flower with a Clove Heart

Carnation is a flower whose scent blends peppery petals, clove and a touch of rose. In perfumery it brings a warm, spicy and slightly vintage floral note. Because its absolute is rare, it is usually recreated as an accord.

What does Carnation smell like?

Carnation smells first of spice: a clean, almost prickly clove, softened by rosy sweetness and a hint of honey. In older compositions it takes on a powdery, slightly faded character that recalls buttonholes and formal drawing rooms. On skin the spicy facet lasts well, binding with woods and resins into a dry warmth. Used lightly, it simply adds a spark to a floral bouquet.

Origin and production

Carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) grows around the Mediterranean and was long associated with Grasse and the French Riviera. Its absolute, obtained by solvent extraction, is very expensive and rarely used. Perfumers rebuild it with eugenol and isoeugenol, molecules found in clove, together with rose and ylang-ylang. Carnation peaked in the first half of the twentieth century before becoming a more discreet note.

How perfumers use it

Placed in the heart, carnation warms up florals and bridges them to oriental or woody bases. It works with rose, jasmine, cinnamon, pepper, patchouli and resins. Yves Saint Laurent Opium folds it into its spicy heart, Chanel Pour Monsieur uses it to lift a classic masculine structure, and Caron Tabac Blond pairs it with leather and iris in a distinctly Roaring Twenties spirit.

How to wear it

Carnation suits autumn and winter and appeals to men and women who enjoy spicy florals with a retro charm.

Frequently asked questions

What does carnation smell like?

Carnation smells like a spicy flower: clove, soft pepper and a hint of rose. It is a warm floral, less sweet than rose or jasmine, with a slightly retro character. In perfume it adds bite and depth to the heart of a composition, often in dialogue with woods or resins.

Is carnation a masculine or feminine note?

Both. Carnation shaped feminine fragrances such as Yves Saint Laurent Opium and Estée Lauder Beautiful, but also masculine ones like Chanel Pour Monsieur, Guerlain Habit Rouge and Yves Saint Laurent Kouros. Its clove facet blends naturally with the woods and leathers typical of men's perfumery.

Why is carnation rare in modern perfumes?

Natural carnation absolute is costly, and the molecules used to recreate it, such as isoeugenol, are restricted under allergen regulations. Taste has also shifted towards sweeter or more transparent florals. Carnation is making a quiet comeback in some niche creations that value its spicy character.
