Our take
What does Joy Forever smell like?
In autumn 2013 Jean Patou launched Joy Forever, its first big project since Designer Parfums bought the house in 2011. In-house perfumer Thomas Fontaine composed it. The goal was simple: build an easier way into Joy, the 1930 floral. The opening is green and sparkling. Bergamot and mandarin are cut through by very leafy galbanum. The heart keeps Joy’s May rose and jasmine. Marigold adds a herbal, slightly bitter note, iris lays down a powdery veil and orange blossom brings a little sunshine. Osmoz also lists a peach that softens the edges. The base is more modern than the original. Cedar and sandalwood sit with amber and white musks. Joy remains richer and more animalic. Joy Forever feels cleaner and lighter, and far easier to wear at the office. It feels like a sketch of Joy rather than a copy.
When to wear it
A daytime floral for spring and summer. Two sprays on the wrists and the nape.
It belongs to the Floral family. Joy Forever is one of 3 creations by Patou in our encyclopedia.
