Our take
What does Extravagance d'Amarige smell like?
Givenchy launched Extravagance d'Amarige in 1998, seven years after Amarige. The plan was simple: keep the floral generosity of the original and make it greener. The top gathers mandarin, violet leaf, rosebay and tagetes. Tagetes brings that green, slightly bitter smell of crushed stems. In the heart, orange blossom and jasmine soften around sweet wisteria. The base holds a surprise. Cedar and sandalwood carry powdery iris and a wild strawberry that adds an almost childlike fruitiness. The result stays bright and easy to live with. Compared with Amarige, a big sunny white floral, Extravagance is less heady and more airy. It has less ego, which makes it easier to wear in daylight. The strawberry at the end is the detail you remember, more than the flowers. It's a gentle scent for people who find most big florals too loud.
