The story of Atelier Cologne
Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel founded Atelier Cologne in Paris in 2009. Their starting point was that cologne, an eighteenth-century invention, charms with its freshness but evaporates too quickly. Their answer was Cologne Absolue, a more concentrated cologne that keeps the sparkle of citrus while lasting far longer on skin. The brand also stood out through its workshop aesthetic: squat, sturdy bottles with colourful labels, and names that evoke specific places, seasons and moments rather than abstract moods. It grew quickly and steadily through department stores and specialist boutiques in France and abroad. In 2016 Atelier Cologne joined the L'Oréal group, which gave it much wider distribution. Clementine California, released that same year, captures the sunny, story-driven approach of the house.
An olfactory signature
Atelier Cologne's signature is citrus first: zest, pulp and peel. In Clementine California, clementine and mandarin burst over juniper berry, which lends an almost gin-like edge. The heart of basil, star anise and pepper adds aromatic tension that keeps the fruit from turning sweet. A base of cypress, vetiver and sandalwood delivers the longevity Cologne Absolue promises. The overall result evokes fruit peeled in the sun, bright yet properly structured.
Which Atelier Cologne perfume to choose?
In our database Atelier Cologne is represented by Clementine California, a unisex aromatic citrus from 2016. Pick it if you love sparkling colognes but find they vanish too fast: its vetiver and sandalwood base stretches the freshness. It is ideal for summer, the gym or the office, and layers easily with a discreet musk.
