What does Cranberry smell like?
Cranberry smells like red juice that needs more sugar: bright, slightly astringent acidity with a dried-fruit undertone. It is less jammy than strawberry or raspberry. The effect is mostly tonic. In a perfume it gives a red, fizzy opening that fades after an hour. It stands out best in masculine scents, where it cuts against the woods.
Origin and production
The large cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) grows in North American bogs, where the fields are often flooded at harvest so the berries float. The fruit yields no usable oil for perfume. The cranberry note is an accord built from red-berry notes, fruity esters and a sour twist.
How perfumers use it
Cranberry sharpens a fruity scent or colours a spicy top. It pairs with grapefruit, pink pepper and rose. Ralph Lauren Polo Red (2013) opens with it alongside red grapefruit and saffron for a dry, masculine red. Paco Rabanne Black XS for Her (2007) sets it with tamarind and pink pepper before a cacao base. Lalique Nilang (1995) places it in the heart of a fruity floral oriental.
How to wear it
Cranberry works year-round, best in autumn. Polo Red holds well in the evening but its tart top fades fast, so go for two sprays on skin and one on clothes.
