What does Eucalyptus smell like?
Eucalyptus smells like a throat lozenge or a steam room. The opening is cool, almost icy, with a camphor base. There is also a green, woody side from crushed leaves. In perfume it is tricky to dose: too much and it smells like a pharmacy. Used well, it opens a composition and gives it air. It fades fairly fast, in about an hour.
Origin and production
Eucalyptus oil comes mostly from Eucalyptus globulus, native to south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. The tree has been planted in many countries, from Spain and Portugal to China. The leaves are steam-distilled. The main component is eucalyptol, also called 1,8-cineole. It is what gives that cooling feel.
How perfumers use it
Eucalyptus pairs with mint, lavender, rosemary and citrus. In Carnal Flower (2005), Dominique Ropion used it to brighten a very rich tuberose. Lacoste Booster (1996) sets it with mint in a sporty fougère. Yves Saint Laurent Body Kouros (2000) goes for contrast, with eucalyptus opening a base of caramel and incense. Calvin Klein Women (2018) pairs it with pepper.
How to wear it
Eucalyptus suits spring and summer days. Two sprays of Carnal Flower are enough. Body Kouros is sweeter and better in winter.
