What does Grapefruit Blossom smell like?
Grapefruit blossom first smells of a white citrus flower, soft and lightly honeyed like neroli. Then comes a fresh bitterness, the peel of a pink grapefruit. That contrast is the point: the flower never turns sugary. The effect is bright and fizzy, with the faint sulphurous edge typical of grapefruit. On skin the floral side lasts longer than the zest.
Origin and production
Grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi) is a hybrid that appeared in Barbados in the 18th century, probably from a cross between pomelo and sweet orange. Its white, fragrant flowers are not used in perfumery. The perfumer rebuilds the note from neroli or orange blossom, adding nootkatone, the molecule that gives grapefruit its smell.
How perfumers use it
Grapefruit blossom sits in the top or heart. Paco Rabanne Olympéa Intense (2016) opens with it alongside orange blossom and pepper before a salted vanilla: its bitterness keeps the sugar at bay. Calvin Klein CK All (2017) pairs it with mandarin and bergamot in a shared scent. Jimmy Choo Illicit Flower (2016) sets it in the heart with rose and jasmine. Lanvin A Girl in Capri (2019) pairs it with sea notes.
How to wear it
Grapefruit blossom suits spring and summer. A Girl in Capri and CK All are office-friendly. The more vanillic Olympéa Intense also works on winter evenings.
