What does White Lily smell like?
Perfumers' white lily smells like a freshly cut stem: green sap and a hint of pollen. The heavy, spicy side of oriental lilies is kept at a distance. Those are the ones that flood a room. The effect is lighter, sometimes almost watery. Picture a vase by an open window. With musks it reads as clean. With vanilla it turns creamier without losing its light.
Origin and production
The Madonna lily (Lilium candidum), native to the eastern Mediterranean, is the archetypal white lily. Religious painting made it a symbol of purity, notably in Annunciation scenes. Like other lilies it yields no usable oil for perfume. The note is an accord. The perfumer builds it from green notes, light floral molecules and sometimes a touch of honey.
How perfumers use it
White lily sits in the heart. Hugo Boss Hugo Woman (1997) pairs it with green apple and aquatic notes, very much in the fresh spirit of the late 1990s. Dolce & Gabbana Dolce (2014) mixes it with narcissus and white water lily. Hermès Un Jardin sur la Lagune (2019), by Christine Nagel, sets it near magnolia and pittosporum over driftwood. The One Essence (2015) prefers a vanilla and amber base.
How to wear it
White lily is a daytime scent for spring and summer. These perfumes stay light and suit the office. For a warmer take, pick The One Essence, which holds up better at night.
