What does Vanilla Orchid smell like?
Vanilla orchid smells like vanilla minus the bakery. The sugary roundness of the pod stays, carried by a milky floral note somewhere between heliotrope and white flowers. The result suggests light cream more than cake. On skin the accord turns more powdery and musky. It lasts well, especially when it rests on white musks and sandalwood.
Origin and production
The vanilla vine (Vanilla planifolia) is a climbing orchid native to Mexico, where the Totonac people grew it. Its flower opens for a single day and has very little scent. The aroma develops in the pod, picked green and then scalded, sweated and dried for months. In 1841, on Réunion island, a twelve-year-old enslaved boy named Edmond Albius devised the hand-pollination method that made cultivation possible outside Mexico. The vanilla orchid note is a perfumer's construction.
How perfumers use it
The accord pairs vanilla, natural or synthetic, with soft florals such as heliotrope or jasmine. Musks and praline often join in. Ariana Grande Cloud (2018) sets vanilla orchid at the heart of an airy gourmand, between whipped cream and praline. Lancôme La Nuit Trésor (2015) blends it with black rose and praline. Kayali Vanilla 28 puts it right in the top, and Ariana Grande Ari surrounds it with marshmallow.
How to wear it
Vanilla orchid suits October to March, day or night. Cloud stays light enough for school or work. La Nuit Trésor is denser and better kept for dinner.
