Our take
What does Midnight Rain smell like?
Best known for luxury skincare, La Prairie launched Midnight Rain in 2006, sold at Neiman Marcus among others in the United States. The perfumer was never named. The house pitched it as a floral for women who would rather not waste the night sleeping. The opening is watery and fruity. Guava, pomegranate and mandarin come through, with freesia keeping things sheer. Picture warm rain on a fruit stall. Then the heart darkens. Plum blossom, white lily and vanilla orchid build a fleshier bouquet, warmed by an amber flower note. The base holds a clear patchouli with vetiver, cashmeran and white musks. Patchouli gives it structure without the weight of Angel, and the vanilla stays a shadow instead of sugar. It has been discontinued and now turns up mostly secondhand, at very uneven prices.
When to wear it
For spring or autumn evenings on warm skin. Two sprays are enough, as the patchouli grows after the first hour.
It belongs to the Floral, Fruity family. Midnight Rain is one of 1 creations by La Prairie in our encyclopedia.
