Our take
What does Coco Mademoiselle Intense smell like?
Chanel released Coco Mademoiselle Intense in 2018, seventeen years after the original. Olivier Polge, the house perfumer since 2015, reworked the formula his father Jacques had created. He kept the frame and pushed the base. Orange and bergamot open as before, with a sparkling freshness. That citrus top lasts only a few minutes. Rose and jasmine follow, less bright than in the 2001 version. Then the patchouli takes over, thicker and earthier. Tonka and vanilla wrap it in an almost gourmand sweetness, and cistus adds a resinous, ambery touch. The lighter notes of the original are gone. Compared with Coco Mademoiselle, the Intense trades some elegance for warmth and staying power. You'll recognise it on the street right away. That's both its strength and its limit. Patchouli lovers will find more to enjoy here than in the original.
