What does N°19 smell like?
N°19 was released in 1971, the last major fragrance tied to Gabrielle Chanel, who died that same year; the name refers to her birthday, 19 August. Henri Robert composed a green chypre of almost cutting clarity. Galbanum dominates the opening, bitter and leafy, lifted by neroli and bergamot that brighten it without softening it. The heart belongs to iris, cool and powdery, barely warmed by jasmine and rose. Oakmoss, vetiver and leather then settle into a dry, earthy, aristocratic base. It suggests a snapped stem, a kidskin glove, a figure uninterested in charming anyone. This is the Chanel for independent temperaments.

A daytime and office scent for the in-between seasons. It speaks to lovers of green chypres and aloof, understated elegance.
