Pour Monsieur, launched in 1955 and composed by Henri Robert, was Chanel’s first masculine fragrance. It embodies an elegance of restraint rather than display. The citrus opening pairs lemon, neroli and bergamot in a clean, cologne-like flash. The heart turns distinctively aromatic with green, anisic tarragon and peppery carnation, laid over cool, slightly damp oakmoss. The base of sandalwood, vetiver and labdanum stays sober, woody and lightly ambered. This is the masculine chypre at its most refined: a scent noticed only up close, like a tailor’s detail.
