Our take
What does Paris-Deauville smell like?
Chanel launched Paris-Deauville in 2018 together with Paris-Biarritz and Paris-Venise, under the name Les Eaux de Chanel. Olivier Polge composed all three. Deauville recalls the boutique Gabrielle Chanel opened there in 1913. The opening revolves around freshly peeled bitter orange, with bergamot and lemon. A peppery basil slips in and steals the show. The heart turns green. You smell crushed stems and leaves, then a light rose and jasmine that drift by like a garden breeze. The base is warmer than you would expect from a fresh eau. Soft patchouli and woods give it staying power without weight. There is no oakmoss, even though it is sometimes filed among the chypres. Next to the Les Exclusifs Eau de Cologne, Paris-Deauville is greener and woodier, with less focus on neroli. It is a smart summer buy.
