Our take
What does Ambre Nuit smell like?
François Demachy created Ambre Nuit in 2009 for Dior's La Collection Privée. The house classifies it as amber woody floral, which is accurate. The top is bright, with Calabrian bergamot and a pink pepper that bites more than it fruits. Rose arrives quickly. It's a Damask rose essence, dry and spicy, nothing like a dewy garden rose. The base is the real subject. Ambergris brings a salty and mineral note far from the vanilla ambers most people expect. Guaiac gives soft smoke and cedar a dry line. Patchouli and a resin add some warmth without weight. It stays airy enough for a spring evening, which is rare for an amber. It is still sold, now under the La Collection Privée Christian Dior banner.
When to wear it
Autumn through spring, for evenings or special occasions. Two sprays on clothing, where the rose lingers for a long time.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Woody family. Ambre Nuit is one of 72 creations by Dior in our encyclopedia.
