Our take
What does Encens Mythique smell like?
Thierry Wasser created this for Guerlain in 2012 under the name Encens Mythique d'Orient. It returned in 2019 in the Les Absolus d'Orient line, lightly retouched. Aldehydes open with an almost metallic sparkle. Saffron and pink pepper add peppery warmth. The heart is led by a dry, unsweetened rose framed by earthy patchouli and vetiver. Then frankincense takes over. It is a bright incense, closer to fresh resin than to a cold church. Ambergris and musk extend it with a salty note that clings to skin. Compared with Comme des Garçons Avignon, which is starker and smokier, Encens Mythique feels warmer. It is rosier too. Several retailers list it as discontinued, and bottles are getting hard to find. The note pyramid varies from one source to another.
When to wear it
For winter evenings or a special occasion. One spray on the back of the neck is enough, as it projects widely.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Woody family. Encens Mythique is one of 89 creations by Guerlain in our encyclopedia.
