Our take
What does Granville smell like?
Granville joined Dior's private collection in 2010. François Demachy based it on Les Rhumbs, Christian Dior's childhood villa in Normandy. There the Channel wind mixes with the smell of pine trees. The opening is lively and herbal with rosemary, thyme and lemon. It suggests a seaside garden more than a beach. The heart is the best part. Pine gives a green resin and gorse adds its slightly waxy yellow flower. The base turns dry. Sandalwood, black pepper and a smoky touch recall a wood fire that went out the night before. There is no sugar here and no heavy marine note. Compared with Pino Silvestre, the Italian pine scent from the 1950s, Granville feels finer and far less soapy. Lovers of Mediterranean scrubland will enjoy it as much as anyone nostalgic for the Normandy coast.
When to wear it
For a coastal walk or a Saturday in the garden, from spring to late summer. It works just as well on a man as on a woman.
It belongs to the Woody, Aromatic family. Granville is one of 56 creations by Dior in our encyclopedia.
