Our take
What does Mouchoir de Monsieur smell like?
Jacques Guerlain composed Mouchoir de Monsieur in 1904. The name refers to the scented handkerchiefs carried by well-dressed men of the period. It's still sold as an eau de toilette in the house's bee bottle. It descends directly from Jicky, created by Aimé Guerlain in 1889. The opening brings together frank lavender, bergamot and lemony verbena. It stays fresh for a few minutes. Then the civet arrives, stronger than in Jicky, giving a warm and almost toasted effect. The heart remains floral under the surface. Rose, jasmine and neroli can be made out, along with a little patchouli. The base combines vanilla, iris and tonka bean into a soapy powder. One commenter summed it up neatly as Jicky with a moustache. Because of the civet, it sits closer to Jicky eau de parfum than to the eau de toilette.
