Our take
What does Madame Rochas smell like?
Hélène Rochas wanted something easier to wear than Femme. She gave the job to Guy Robert, and Madame Rochas came out in 1960. Aldehydes open with a clean-laundry effect. Bergamot, lemon and neroli keep the start crisp. The heart is a big floral bouquet. Rose and jasmine lead, while tuberose and lily of the valley add white flowers. Iris and ylang-ylang bring powder and a little cream. The base gathers sandalwood, vetiver and cedar alongside musk and oakmoss. Tonka bean warms the finish. Everything stays smooth and carefully built. People often compare it to Chanel N°5, another aldehydic floral. Madame Rochas is softer and less metallic, and more floral as well. The formula was reworked in the 1980s. Today's eau de toilette sells for very little and keeps the spirit, with less moss than before.
When to wear it
