Our take
What does Ungaro pour l'Homme III smell like?
Emanuel Ungaro’s third masculine, Ungaro pour l’Homme III, appeared in 1993 in a black bottle trimmed with gold. The perfumer was never officially credited. It sits among the aromatic green fougères. The opening is busy, very much of its time. Lemon and orange mingle with coriander, lavender and clary sage. A mahogany note and a so-called vodka accord add a dry, almost boozy edge. The heart is surprisingly floral. Rose, geranium, jasmine and lily of the valley soften the structure without making it feminine. The base keeps the richness of the 1990s. Sandalwood and patchouli lead with vetiver and cedar. Musk and oakmoss close the parade. Davidoff’s Cool Water, released five years earlier, had pulled the fougère toward the sea. Ungaro III stays loyal to the woody, floral tradition. Older bottles smell richer than recent ones.
