Our take
What does In New York smell like?
The Van Cleef & Arpels boutique on Fifth Avenue was the starting point for In New York, a men’s eau de toilette launched in 2016. The jeweller uses it to nod to its long history in the United States. The square bottle in thick grey glass plays on skyscraper lines. No perfumer was named. The opening is brisk and urban, with lemon, mandarin and a slightly salty marine note. The heart goes back to a classic. Lavender and clary sage recall shaving soap and a tidy men’s bathroom. The base curls around amber woods and tonka bean and ends softer than you would expect. Think of Azzaro pour Homme made lighter and more marine, without the anise or the moss. Find it soon if you want it, since several retailers list it as discontinued.
