What does Watermelon smell like?
Watermelon smells of sweet water, a cold slice straight from the fridge. There is some green from the rind and a hint of cucumber. The sugar stays light. In perfume it gives a damp freshness more than a real fruit flavour. It sits close to melon and marine notes. On skin it fades fast. It mostly opens a perfume with an ice-cube effect.
Origin and production
Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a cucurbit grown in Africa and across the Mediterranean. The fruit is mostly water and gives no fragrant oil. The note developed thanks to Calone, a synthetic molecule discovered in the 1960s. Its smell suggests both watermelon and sea spray. Other fruity and green molecules complete the accord.
How perfumers use it
Watermelon sits in the top with kiwi, melon, citrus and coconut. Dolce & Gabbana L'Impératrice (2009) pairs it with kiwi and pink cyclamen. Clarins Eau Ensoleillante (2007) places it over citrus. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Coconut Fizz (2019) blends it with coconut water. Courrèges Mini Jupe (2018) opens with it before a base of hazelnut and vanilla.
How to wear it
Watermelon is a summer note, on the beach or in town. L'Impératrice can take four sprays. Plan to top up late in the day.
