Our take
What does Cabotine smell like?
Grès launched Cabotine in 1990, with Jean-Claude Delville as the perfumer. Its star material is ginger lily, a white flower that is hard to capture. IFF rebuilt it using its living-flower analysis technique. The bottle echoes the idea with a green flower-shaped stopper. The opening is lively: mandarin, prickly ginger and an already creamy ylang-ylang. Then the ginger lily settles in, green and a little peppery. Hyacinth adds fresh sap and tuberose thickens the heart. The base stays light. Patchouli, sandalwood and musk carry a tart blackcurrant that keeps the playful tone of the name. In French a cabotine is a little show-off actress. Compared with Cacharel's Anaïs Anaïs, another hugely popular green floral, Cabotine is spicier and less powdery. It has stayed on shelves for decades, which says a lot about how easy it is to wear.
When to wear it
A spring floral for daytime that handles heat well. Three sprays are fine, since it fades within a few hours.
It belongs to the Floral, Green family. Cabotine is one of 3 creations by Grès in our encyclopedia.
