What does Ginger Lily smell like?
Picture an airier jasmine shot through with lemon zest and fresh ginger root. Ginger lily opens on a citrusy, slightly spicy note. Then the white flower takes over, creamy without weight. There is less indole than in jasmine and more light. In perfume it gives floral hearts an exotic glow. On skin it slides towards a milky softness after a few hours.
Origin and production
The plant most often cited is Hedychium coronarium, the white ginger lily, part of the Zingiberaceae family like ginger. It comes from the Himalayas and the Indian subcontinent and has spread across the tropics. It is the national flower of Cuba, where it is called mariposa. A small amount of absolute is produced. Most mainstream perfumes use a reconstructed accord.
How perfumers use it
Ginger lily brightens white-flower hearts and links them to salty or milky notes. Paco Rabanne Olympéa (2015) pairs it with salted vanilla. Its follow-up Olympéa Legend (2019) keeps it. Cacharel sets it in the heart of Yes I Am (2018) and Yes I Am Pink First (2019). Earlier on, Grès Cabotine (1990) already surrounded it with hyacinth and tuberose. Hermès Barénia (2024) tucks it into a chypre.
How to wear it
Ginger lily suits spring and summer, day or evening. Two sprays on the neck are enough with Olympéa, which lasts a long time.
