Our take
What does HM smell like?
Japanese couturier Hanae Mori released HM in 1998. This men's scent sometimes appears on shelves as Him. Don't confuse it with HiM, which arrived much later. The perfumer was never named. It opens briskly with tart lemon, aromatic lavender and crisp mint that clears the nose. The heart is surprisingly soft. Jasmine, Bulgarian rose and iris form a quiet bouquet, more powdery than floral. The base is where it really settles in. Sandalwood, tonka and vanilla bring a gourmand warmth, and a green moss keeps it from turning into dessert. The structure is the classic vanilla fougère. Caron's Pour un Homme, which pioneered the style, remains its plainest model. HM adds citrus and a floral touch that make it feel more modern. It lasts well on skin but stays close, so nobody across the desk will notice it.
When to wear it
An office scent for autumn and winter, fresh enough at the start for a mild spring. Two or three sprays on the neck.
It belongs to the Oriental / Amber, Fougère family. HM is one of 2 creations by Hanae Mori in our encyclopedia.
