Our take
What does Butterfly smell like?
Bernard Ellena composed Butterfly for Hanae Mori in 1995. The colours of the butterfly on the box mark the concentration, and pink stands for the eau de toilette. The opening is a basket of red fruit: wild strawberry, blackcurrant, blackberry and blueberry. Strawberry clearly leads. It smells candied, resting on a caramel impression that no listed note claims. Jasmine and ylang-ylang join rose and peony in the heart. The flowers mainly lighten the sugar. The base is creamy. Sandalwood and cedar carry Brazilian rosewood and a soft almond that recalls pastry. Compared with Thierry Mugler's Angel, another 1990s gourmand, Butterfly has no patchouli. It feels rounder and more childlike as a result. A slightly green and soapy note keeps it from turning into candy. It's an endearing perfume, more serious than it looks.
