What does Moss smell like?
Moss smells like a forest on a wet November morning. Damp bark and a little ink, plus a salty edge close to seaweed. Tree moss adds a tanned, almost smoky leather side. Nothing about it is fresh. It is a shadow note that lasts for hours and lines the base without ever shining up top. On dry skin it can feel austere.
Origin and production
Perfumery moss is not moss at all but lichen. Oakmoss (Evernia prunastri) grows on oak branches, tree moss (Pseudevernia furfuracea) on conifers. Most of it is gathered in the Balkans and North Africa, then solvent-extracted into a thick absolute. Some natural components are allergens. IFRA standards cap their use, so houses rely on low-atranol grades or on synthetic substitutes.
How perfumers use it
Moss holds chypres and fougères together. Take it out and the structure collapses. It also darkens leather. Molinard Habanita used it as early as 1921 to dress a powdery tobacco. Tom Ford Ombre Leather slides it under supple leather and quiet jasmine. Le Labo Another 13 blends it with ambrette into an abstract musky skin. Parfums de Marly Kalan puts it in a spicy oriental that runs darker than you expect.
How to wear it
Wear moss in autumn, when the ground smells of wet leaves. Two sprays on a wool jumper are enough. Habanita and Ombre Leather will still be there the next day.
