Our take
What does Métal smell like?
Paco Rabanne launched Métal in 1979, an eau de toilette by Robert Gonnon, the Firmenich perfumer who also composed Ô de Lancôme. The name nods to the metal plate dresses that made the designer famous. The opening is green and cold. Hyacinth, green notes and aldehydes create an almost mineral sparkle, sharpened further by basil and lemon. The heart is a classic floral bouquet. Lily of the valley, iris and cyclamen lead. Jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang are held back. The base is pure floral chypre: oakmoss, vetiver and sandalwood with a little amber and musk. Chanel’s No 19 from 1970 comes to mind for the same tension between greenery and powder. Métal is slightly less austere. The original was discontinued, and later reissues don’t always smell like it.
When to wear it
For spring and autumn, at the office or an important meeting. Two sprays are enough because the oakmoss lasts.
It belongs to the Floral, Chypre family. Métal is one of 35 creations by Paco Rabanne in our encyclopedia.
