Our take
What does Fils de Joie smell like?
Serge Lutens launched Fils de Joie in September 2020. The name twists the French phrase for a prostitute, fille de joie. The house tells of a son who laughs for no reason, raised in the shadow of other people's revels. Christopher Sheldrake built it around a night flower, the jasmine that only opens after sunset. The opening smells of green jasmine, almost fruity. A quiet honey softens it. Ylang-ylang adds a creamy note with a touch of banana. Musk holds the base and leaves the skin smelling clean. Jasmine stays in the middle from start to finish. Compared with À la nuit, the house jasmine from 2000, Fils de Joie is sweeter and less indolic. Some wearers pick up a camphor edge and others never do. The name fits. This is a happy floral, which is still rare at Lutens.
When to wear it
A jasmine for spring and summer evenings or dinner outdoors. Two sprays on the throat give a presence that never crowds the room.
It belongs to the Floral family. Fils de Joie is one of 31 creations by Serge Lutens in our encyclopedia.
