The story of By Kilian
Kilian Hennessy, heir to the cognac family, trained in perfumery at major houses before launching his own brand in 2007. From the outset he designed heavy refillable bottles presented in lockable cases, closer to collector's objects than cosmetics, a deliberate statement about how luxury fragrance should be experienced. The first collection, L'Œuvre Noire, set out a vocabulary of nocturnal, sensual scents. Love Don't Be Shy, released that same year, would become one of the house's best sellers. In 2016 the brand joined the Estée Lauder group, which accelerated its international growth. Angels' Share, launched in 2020, pays tribute to the family's cognac heritage, named after the portion of spirit that evaporates from the barrels as it ages. The house has since adopted the name Kilian Paris.
An olfactory signature
The Kilian signature moves between gourmand indulgence and woody warmth. Love Don't Be Shy layers bergamot, neroli and pink pepper over honeysuckle, iris, jasmine and orange blossom, then melts into caramel, sugar, vanilla and musk: a floral marshmallow. Angels' Share is a warm cognac accord spiced with cinnamon, tonka bean and oak on a base of praline, vanilla and sandalwood. In both, the sweetness is rich, enveloping and deliberately indulgent.
Which By Kilian perfume to choose?
If you love sweet florals as soft as confectionery, Love Don't Be Shy is the obvious starting point, leaning feminine. For a unisex winter scent, woody and boozy, Angels' Share smells like spiced cognac by the fire. Both are generous: one or two sprays are enough, and they shine in the evening or in cool weather.
