What does Angels' Share smell like?
Angels’ Share, launched in 2020 as part of Kilian’s liquors collection, is named after the portion of spirit that evaporates from casks during ageing. Benoist Lapouza made it a warm, gourmand woody oriental. Cognac opens the composition, fruity, slightly woody and heady. The heart pairs warm cinnamon with soft tonka bean and an oak note that recalls the barrel. Praline, vanilla and creamy sandalwood in the base extend the sweetness, suggesting a nutty pastry served with a digestif. Rich, warm and instantly recognisable. The oak keeps the sweetness grounded, and the cognac glows through well into the drydown.

For autumn and winter evenings, especially indoors; it appeals to lovers of spicy woody gourmands.
The story of Angels' Share
Kilian Hennessy founded his house in 2007. An heir to the cognac family of the same name, he launched a collection devoted to spirits in 2020, and Angels' Share quickly became its best-known title. The name refers to the angels' share, the portion of spirit that evaporates from casks as it ages and scents the cellars of Cognac. Benoist Lapouza did not go for realism. There is no burning alcohol here, just a fruity cognac rounded by cinnamon, oak and a hefty praline. It arrived when woody gourmands were having a moment in niche perfumery. Estée Lauder, owner of the brand since 2016, was pushing Kilian toward a broader audience at the time. The family link gave the launch a story few houses could tell, and the brand made full use of it. Other spirit-themed scents joined the same collection later. None has matched the reach of this one, which for many people is the first Kilian they ever smell.
Our detailed review
Spray it and you get fruity, almost candied cognac with a hint of raisin. There's no boozy burn, and that's deliberate. Within half an hour the cinnamon warms up and the oak adds a dry woodiness that keeps it from turning into pure pastry. That's the stage we like best. The base arrives around hour three: praline, vanilla and sandalwood, like a warm pecan tart. It lasts a long time and stays legible to the end, which gourmands don't always manage. Two reservations, though. Tonka and praline eventually cover everything, so the cognac fades and the last hours are frankly sweet. And the signature is so recognisable that it leaves little room for discretion. It will please anyone who likes warmth and grown-up sweetness. People who prefer dry, green or floral scents will find it cloying.
Angels' Share vs its rivals
Tom Ford's Bitter Peach, launched the same year, also lists cognac along with rum. Everything there revolves around a fleshy peach and patchouli, so it's fruitier and sexier, and less cosy. If you like the spirit idea without the bakery, Bitter Peach fits better. Althair from Parfums de Marly is the most direct rival, sharing cinnamon, praline, vanilla and tonka. Orange blossom and ambroxan make Althair brighter and louder, whereas Angels' Share leans on oak and barrel. We prefer Angels' Share for its woody depth and Althair for its reach. Eragon, also from Parfums de Marly, shares cinnamon, vanilla and tonka. It adds leather, cypriol and patchouli. Its davana gives a boozy effect close to cognac. It's darker and more masculine. For a unisex woody gourmand, stick with Angels' Share.
Longevity, projection and use
As an eau de parfum it easily gives eight to ten hours on skin, and the praline clings to wool until the next day. Projection is generous for two or three hours. Two sprays are enough, and three is the absolute limit outdoors in real cold. We spray the neck and upper chest, not the wrists, where the sweetness quickly gets heady. It's an autumn and winter scent for evenings, dinners and dates. In an overheated room or mild weather, drop to one spray, because the sugar rises fast.
