What does Coconut Water smell like?
Think of the clear liquid you sip through a straw from a green coconut. The smell is milky but diluted, slightly sweet and almost watery. The lactonic side of coconut is still there, minus the fatty richness. On skin the accord stays close and recalls clean skin after a swim. It fades faster than a creamy coconut.
Origin and production
Coconut water is the liquid inside young green coconuts. It is not distilled for perfumery, as its scent is too faint and fragile. Perfumers rebuild it with lactones, the molecules behind coconut's milky side. Watery, ozonic or fruity notes then lighten the result. The result owes as much to the fashion for fresh scents as to the fruit itself.
How perfumers use it
Coconut water gives a holiday feel without weight. It works with citrus, green apple and white flowers. Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Sun (2019) puts it up top with Granny Smith apple and ozonic notes. Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Coconut Fizz (2019) adds watermelon for fizz. More unexpected, Mugler Alien Goddess (2021) opens with it before jasmine and vanilla, like a breath of air before the sun.
How to wear it
This is a summer note for holidays and skin fresh out of the sea. Be generous with three or four sprays: the accord is light and gone within a few hours.
