What does Oak smell like?
An oak note smells like barrel wood. Tannic dryness, soft vanilla and a touch of coconut. It is the smell of a cellar where whisky and cognac age. In a perfume it gives sweet accords some gravity and hints at alcohol without naming it. It stays in the base and lasts a long time on skin.
Origin and production
Oak (genus Quercus) supplies the wood for wine and spirit barrels. In contact with alcohol it releases lactones that smell of coconut and wood, along with vanillin. Perfumers recreate this with those synthetic molecules or with oak wood extracts. Oakmoss is unrelated. It is a lichen that grows on the bark and smells of forest floor.
How perfumers use it
Oak suggests ageing. By Kilian Angels’ Share pairs it with cognac, cinnamon and praline. Its name refers to the portion of spirit that evaporates from casks. Hermès Elixir des Merveilles blends it with caramelized orange and incense. Tom Ford Costa Azzurra uses it in the base to suggest driftwood. Hermès Barénia sets it in a modern chypre with patchouli.
How to wear it
Oak suits autumn and winter, ideally in the evening. With Angels’ Share, two sprays are enough. The praline sweetness builds fast.
