Our take
What does CK Free smell like?
Calvin Klein launched CK Free in 2009. Rodrigo Flores-Roux and Ellen Molner composed it for a young crowd that had grown up with CK One. The opening is herbal and slightly bitter. Absinthe and star anise lead, juniper berries add a gin twist and jackfruit brings an unexpected fruity edge. Then the mood shifts. Tobacco leaf, coffee and suede give a dry warmth, a bit like a leather jacket left in a bar overnight. The base holds on cedar, oak and patchouli. Woody, clean and a touch dusty. It ages on skin better than its price suggests. Next to CK One, a citrus scent built to be shared, CK Free goes for a more classic masculine identity. At moments its dry woods recall Terre d’Hermès, minus the orange and the mineral side.
