Our take
What does Barénia smell like?
Hermès unveiled Barénia in 2024. The name comes from the calfskin the house uses for its saddles and bags, prized for the way it ages. Christine Nagel does not try to copy the smell of leather, though. She wrote a chypre that Hermès presents as a skin scent. Bergamot opens alongside miracle berry, a West African fruit known for making sour things taste sweet. The heart rests on butterfly lily, a white flower from the ginger family with a gentle spice. The base keeps the chypre structure without old-school oakmoss. Patchouli leads, backed by oakwood and akigalawood, a reworked patchouli material with a peppery twist. Philippe Mouquet’s bottle takes its cue from the Collier de Chien bracelet. Next to Mitsouko, the founding chypre, Barénia feels brighter and far less melancholy.
When to wear it
For day or evening in spring and autumn, worn close to the skin. Use two or three sprays on the neck and wrists, since it is not built for projection.
It belongs to the Chypre family. Barénia is one of 47 creations by Hermès in our encyclopedia.
