What does Milk smell like?
A milk note smells of warm cream, a breakfast bowl, a baby's skin after a bath. It is soft and slightly fatty, with no real sugar. Some versions drift towards coconut, others towards rice pudding. It rounds off everything it touches. On its own it would be bland. Paired with coffee or a white flower, it creates a comfort that is hard to resist. On skin it melts in fast and stays close.
Origin and production
No extraction gives a usable milk smell for perfume. Perfumers use lactones, molecules found naturally in dairy and some fruits. Some smell of cream, others of peach or coconut. Today they are made synthetically. The milky accord is often filled out with musk and vanilla for extra softness.
How perfumers use it
Milk binds a gourmand note to a musky base. It softens coffee, orange blossom and sandalwood. Maison Margiela Replica Coffee Break (2019) pours it into the heart next to coffee. Serge Lutens opens Jeux de Peau (2011) with it and a toasted-bread smell. Cacharel Yes I Am (2018) sets it in the base under ginger lily and raspberry. Hermès Elixir des Merveilles (2006) pairs it with orange and caramel.
How to wear it
Milk works in autumn and winter, day or night. Two sprays on a cashmere sweater and it lasts. In real heat it gets heavy.
