What does White Pepper smell like?
Black pepper sparkles with citrus and woody notes. White pepper is more muted: less freshness, more warmth, with a slightly animalic or fermented edge you notice in a pepper mill. In perfume that nuance is smoothed out. What remains is a dry, clean spice with a gentle prickle. On skin it sits well with musks and pale woods.
Origin and production
The pepper vine (Piper nigrum) is native to the Malabar Coast in southern India. To make white pepper, ripe berries are soaked in water to remove the outer layer, then the seed is dried. Black pepper is picked green and dried whole. The essential oil is steam-distilled.
How perfumers use it
White pepper spices without shoving. It pairs with iris, musks, vetiver and violet. Burberry Touch for Men (2000) teams it with nutmeg and cedar in a very soft woody scent. Calvin Klein Reveal (2014) opens with it alongside salt and ambergris, before an iris and cashmeran base. Lalique White (2008) puts it in the heart between tamarind and elemi.
How to wear it
White pepper works all year and suits the office. Touch for Men stays close to the skin, so three sprays won't bother anyone.
