What does White Musk smell like?
Bury your nose in a sheet fresh from the dryer. That warm, soapy, slightly powdery smell is white musk. It has neither the dirty warmth of animal musk nor the bitterness of older musks. It smells of washed skin, cotton and sometimes a very pale pear. Some people barely smell it, others find it strong, a well-known quirk of musks. On skin it lasts for hours.
Origin and production
Original musk came from a gland of the musk deer, a small Asian animal that is now protected. Chemistry replaced it from the late 19th century onwards. White musk refers to the cleanest synthetic musks, polycyclic or macrocyclic. Some are so common in laundry detergent that they have shaped our idea of clean. The Body Shop made the name famous with its White Musk perfume in 1981.
How perfumers use it
White musk is the bed everything else lies on. It stretches flowers, softens woods and gives a second-skin effect. Guerlain sets it under vanilla and patchouli in La Petite Robe Noire Intense (2016). Dior Sakura (2018) uses it with violet and mimosa below a cherry blossom. Courrèges La Fille de l'Air (2015) pairs it with Ambroxan and an unusual neoprene accord. Azzaro Chrome Pure (2017) mixes it with maté and tonka bean.
How to wear it
White musk works all year, at any hour, and fits anywhere including the office. Spray your clothes too, since it lasts there for days. If you can no longer smell it, don't add more. People around you still can.
